Introduction
The Basilica Cistern is an underground water reservoir built in the sixth century during the reign of Justinian I. Beneath its vaults, stone columns reused from earlier buildings are lined up. Two of its bases preserve heads of Medusa. In Turkish it is called Yerebatan Sarnıcı.
